How to choose the height and cantilever length of traffic signal light poles

2026,10,23
Getting the dimensions right is one of the most practical decisions in any intersection project. If a signal pole is too short or the arm is too long, the signals end up out of the driver's line of sight—or worse, the structure becomes unstable under wind load. So how do engineers actually choose the height and cantilever length?

Start with the road itself. Lane width, number of lanes, and speed limits drive everything. For a typical urban intersection, signal heads should sit roughly 5.0 to 5.5 meters above the roadway, which keeps them visible to both passenger cars and taller vehicles. The cantilever arm, meanwhile, needs to reach far enough to place a signal head over each lane—usually around 6 to 12 meters depending on lane count. Overreach and you add unnecessary stress to the pole; underreach and drivers in the far lane may miss the signal entirely.

It's also worth distinguishing between pole types during planning. Traffic Signal Light Poles are purpose-built for signal heads and pedestrian fixtures, with mounting brackets and wire access designed for the job. A High Mast Light, by contrast, is meant for wide-area illumination—think highway interchanges or large parking areas—and isn't the right choice for hanging signals. And while a street light Pole may look similar on the surface, it's usually engineered for a lighter, single-purpose load and won't handle the dynamic forces of a cantilevered signal arm.

Site conditions matter just as much. Coastal areas call for extra corrosion protection; high-wind zones require shorter arms or reinforced bases. Local standards often set minimum clearances, so always check the applicable code before finalizing dimensions.

In short: match the height to the road and traffic mix, size the cantilever to cover every lane without overloading the structure, and choose a pole designed for signals—not a repurposed street light. Get these three right, and the rest of the installation tends to fall into place.
